Daily Take
Wednesday was a risk-off day. The S&P 500 fell about 0.2 percent and the semiconductor index about 1.1 percent. The dollar index rose 0.41, and gold and silver both fell. Brent's front-month contract settled at 100.20 on ICE, down 0.38, while the December 2027 contract rose to 82.81.
Then crude jumped overnight. Early Thursday Brent traded near 105 and WTI near 93. Bloomberg, following a report in The Atlantic, said the White House had asked for strike options against Iran; there is no official confirmation. Gulf of Mexico producers also shut in more than 510,000 barrels a day ahead of Hurricane Isaias, about a quarter of the region's crude output. The jump is consistent with renewed geopolitical risk, storm-related supply losses, or positioning ahead of an unconfirmed headline. The Gulf shutdowns are a physical disruption, but they provide no evidence that conditions in Hormuz have changed.
TSMC's September sales met the test we set in advance: up about 55 percent on a year earlier and slightly below August, a plateau at a high level. Chip stocks fell on Wednesday, before the release, so Thursday's session is the first full-market reaction. The map comes out of the day with oil's premium back in play but its cause unsettled, and the chip view holding without an upgrade.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. Lanes listed as unchanged carry their last stated reading and state forward. Definitions: Glossary

The standing regime: a narrowing US-Japan policy gap.
What would change our view
A session with the narrower US-Japan policy-rate gap still in place and the dollar flat enough to isolate the yen, in which the yen still weakens.
Rule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?
Full entry in the glossaryRule stateINVALIDATED
The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
