Daily Take
A local ceasefire around Oleshky, in southern Ukraine, took effect at 3 a.m. Kyiv time on October 27. Both sides said so, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda. The date was no surprise. Both general staffs set it on October 23, the day the White House announced the truce for October 29. Ukraine's human-rights commissioner gave October 29 as the start of the humanitarian operation the ceasefire serves, as Ukrainska Pravda reported that evening. By Tuesday morning it appeared to be holding, NBC News reported. Its end date is unresolved. Reuters and a senior Ukrainian lawmaker cited by NBC put the end at November 1; the Associated Press reported through Saturday, October 31, or longer if needed.
The Gulf is a different picture. UK Maritime Trade Operations lists a tanker disabled by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on October 23, and reports of a vessel on fire off Iraq on October 26. It classes the first as an attack and the second as suspicious activity. Brent's front month settled Monday near 116 dollars a barrel. The incidents show Gulf shipping still under threat. They do not show what set Monday's price.
The rest of the week belongs to the central banks. The Fed decides on October 28, and the Bank of Japan meets on October 29 and 30. The standing regime rests on the gap between their policy rates. Oil reaches Japan too: a weak yen makes imported energy dearer, and higher Japanese bond yields tighten Tokyo's bind.
One caveat holds all week. A ceasefire around one town is the first check of a deal. The Russia lane's end point is a truce that holds.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state, and the card dates when that state was last assessed; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Each lane's history, and any end line we have registered, is public at theregimemap.com/lanes. Definitions: Glossary

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED
Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
