Daily Take

The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate a quarter point to 1.25 percent on Friday, the highest in Japan since 1995. That narrowed the gap between Japanese and American policy rates to 2.625 points, the first narrowing in our tracking record. We had written down in advance what should happen next: a closing gap pulls the yen up.

USD/JPY went the other way, trading near 157.80 against Thursday's 156.01 close. A weaker yen, through a hike that was supposed to strengthen it. The vote split 7-2, which reads as a reluctant hike, and a firmer dollar may be doing some of the work, so this is one bad instance rather than a broken idea. But it is our idea, and this is the first time the test we set has come back with an answer we did not want. The Japan lane goes under review today, and the scoreboard says so on its face.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the level or condition we wrote down in advance, and whether it has been met. Thesis is what the evidence now says about the idea itself. Where the two disagree is the interesting part. Only lanes with new evidence get a card. Definitions: Glossary

Lane Rule Rule state Thesis state What changed Next test
Japan / the yen A durable compression of the Japan to Fed rate gap , scored September 18 The hike took the policy rate to 1.25 percent on a 7-2 vote and compressed the gap 25 basis points to 2.625 points, the first compression we have recorded. The yen then weakened to near 157.80. A session where the gap compresses again and the dollar is flat enough to tell the two stories apart.
Rates / the Fed The October path holding above one step on the settle , scored September 17 Our October 28 estimate firmed to 58.0 percent from 52.0 while December softened to 80.0 from 82.0, leaving cumulative tightening near flat. Two-year and ten-year yields both fell about seven basis points with the spread unchanged at 27. Whether October keeps firming while December keeps giving way.
Crude / energy infrastructure A Brent settle below $92 , unmet by 12.82 Brent settled 104.82 and WTI 101.91, giving back further, while Petroline stayed offline with repairs reported as weeks away. The barrels have not followed the restart statement Wednesday's selloff traded on. Our September 24 check on whether the pipeline is physically flowing.
Global demand erosion December 2027 Brent holding above $75 with a calm front December 2027 settled 78.49, a fourth settle above the line, but the front was not calm, so the test could not run. The front-to-back spread narrowed to 26.33 from both ends at once. OPEC cut its 2026 demand growth forecast a fifth straight month, to 0.38 million barrels a day. Our September 22 check on Chinese refinery utilization against the 72 percent line.
Gold / miners Two consecutive front-month COMEX settlements above $4,400 Gold settled 4,399.70, thirty cents under the line, a fourth consecutive settle below it, and our count of qualifying settlements is still zero. Friday has traded above the line, which cannot score the rule. Whether a settlement, rather than a morning print, finally clears it.
Iran / Hormuz Tape-only lane, no price rule written down Russia and China vetoed the extension of the UN panel that monitors Iran sanctions, 11 in favor to 2 against with 2 abstentions. The strait remains severely restricted, with no reopening dated this week. The mandate lapse on September 27.

Unchanged: silver, uranium, semiconductors, quantum, AI infrastructure, European defense and the primes, drones, critical minerals, trade, the US consumer, cybersecurity, renewables, the Red Sea, and Russia-Ukraine sanctions. US equities broke a three-day losing streak and semiconductors ran a fourth straight session ahead of the tape, which fits the rate story above rather than changing a lane. Taiwan is here because we counted this morning: sorties rose again, and the reversal we asked about yesterday did not hold.

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Thesis stateUNDER REVIEW

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

If none of the above applies, the evidence fits the thesis and no rival explanation is open.

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.
