Daily Take
The Federal Reserve raised rates a quarter point on Wednesday, its first increase since 2023, and the vote was 12-0. Three meetings ago the committee split 9-3 against raising; it has now moved to the dissenters entire. The market had the move priced and did not have the unanimity, and our settlement-based estimate already puts a further increase on October 28 at about 52 percent.
What happens next is a Japan question. The increase widened the policy gap to Tokyo by the full quarter point, to 2.875 points from 2.625 on a midpoint basis, on the eve of the Bank of Japan's own decision, and the yen weakened a third straight session. On Tuesday that same currency sat still while Japan's ten-year yield broke 3 percent, which is why we read the break as fiscal rather than as a rate-gap story. It moved this time. The dollar moved too, and that changes what the map is testing without yet changing what it says.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the level or condition we wrote down in advance, and whether it has been met. Thesis is what the evidence now says about the idea itself. Where the two disagree is the interesting part. Only lanes with new evidence get a card. Definitions: Glossary
RATES / THE FED
Rule: a print repricing the October path below one step ·
Thesis:
Raised 25 basis points to 3.75 to 4.00 percent, 12-0; our October 28 estimate sits near 52 percent.
Next: whether the October path holds above one step.
JAPAN / THE YEN
Rule: Japan 10Y above 3.00 percent · , scored September 16
Thesis:
Official 3.028 percent; the gap to the Fed widened a quarter point to 2.875 and the yen weakened a third session, but the dollar rose with it.
Next: whether that gap starts compressing, or the dollar keeps explaining the move.
CRUDE / WAR PREMIUM
Rule: our $92 line on Brent's most-active contract ·
Thesis:
Settled $105.83, down 2.68 percent and $13.83 above the line, while December 2027 barely moved. The cause is a pipeline restart; Hormuz did not reopen.
Next: whether that pipeline physically restarts on the guidance it was given.
GLOBAL DEMAND
Rule: our $75 line on Brent December 2027, held on a quiet front ·
Thesis:
Settled $78.39, a third straight settle above the line, but the front was not quiet so the hold does not count. OPEC cut 2026 growth to 0.38 million barrels a day, a fifth straight cut.
Next: a hold above $75 on a session the front leaves alone.
GOLD
Rule: two consecutive settles above $4,400 ·
Thesis:
Settled $4,387.50, $12.50 short on a third straight settle below the line, but it rose $54.70 on the day the Fed raised rates and the dollar closed back above 100.
Next: whether the bid survives a session the dollar does not lead.
US EQUITY INTERNALS
Rule: the August 13 record close of 7,798.99 retaken ·
Thesis:
Closed 7,551.81, a third straight down close and 247.18 below that record, while the semiconductor index rose 0.63 percent through a rate increase.
Next: whether semiconductors keep pulling away from the index.
RUSSIA SANCTIONS
Rule: the sanctions bill clears its floor window ·
Thesis:
The House agreed 262-159 on Wednesday and sent the bill to the President; he has been reported as opposed and it is not signed.
Next: whether he signs it.
Unchanged: silver, uranium, semiconductors outside the largest name, European defense and the primes, drones, critical minerals, quantum, AI infrastructure, trade, the US consumer, cybersecurity, renewables, the Red Sea, and Taiwan. The Strait of Hormuz is here because we checked it this morning rather than assumed it. It has not reopened.
Rule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

If none of the above applies, the evidence fits the thesis and no rival explanation is open.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.
