Daily Take
Friday's gold settlement cleared our 4,400 line for the first time. This morning, before the US session opened, the December contract was trading about 4,384, some 16 dollars under it. Nothing has settled. A morning price cannot meet our rule and cannot fail it. Only today's settlement can, and if it lands where the morning did, the count we have kept since August goes back to zero.
Crude tells the day's other story. Brent's front month fell about 2.4 percent overnight while the December 2027 contract barely moved. A fall that lives at the front of the curve is the shape supply headlines make when they are priced out. It is the wrong shape for the slow loss of demand we have been tracking, and we say so below.
What we cannot yet say is why. Silver fell with gold, the dollar barely moved, and no single driver explains the metals. Today's settlement is the test that matters. Thursday, when Japan's rate rise takes effect, is the next one, and the yen is already weakening into it.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the level or condition we wrote down in advance, and whether it has been met. Thesis is what the evidence now says about the idea itself. Where the two disagree is the interesting part. Only lanes with new evidence get a card. Definitions: Glossary
Pre-open edition: every level dated today is a live capture taken about 7 a.m. Eastern, before the US session, and a capture cannot settle any rule. Friday, September 18 settlements and closes are marked as such.
| Lane | Rule | Rule state | Thesis state | What changed | Next test |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold / miners | Two consecutive front-month COMEX settlements above $4,400 | , one of two; today's settlement is the second leg | Friday's reported settlement was 4,424.90, the first above the line in this series. The 7 a.m. capture was 4,384.10, down 0.92 percent and 15.90 under it; silver fell 1.13 percent alongside, to 66.39. The dollar index was up about 0.08 percent, too little to explain either. | Today's settlement. Above 4,400 makes two; at or below it, the count resets to zero. | |
| Crude / the pipeline | A Brent front-month settlement below our $92 line | , 9.35 above the line on the capture | Brent's front month traded 101.35 at about 7 a.m., down 2.43 percent from Friday's 103.87 settlement; WTI 97.76. Petroline has no confirmed restart and no Yanbu loading reported since September 11. Aramco is reported to have zeroed October allocations to European term buyers and sold about 60 million barrels from the Gulf instead. | A front-month settlement below 92, or a confirmed change in Petroline's physical state either way. | |
| Global demand / the curve | A December 2027 Brent settlement below our $75 line | , 4.10 above the line on the capture | December 2027 traded 79.10 against Friday's 79.29 settlement while the front fell 2.52; the front-to-back spread narrowed to 22.25 from 24.58. China's September imports are tracking 7.84 million barrels a day against 7.25 in August, on Kpler figures relayed by the South China Morning Post, still far under the sustained 9 million a day that would retire this idea. | Whether December 2027 holds above 75 through a session where the front is calm; that is the condition that retires the idea. | |
| Japan / the yen | USD/JPY at 165, or the ten-year JGB above 3.00 percent | , 7.75 yen and 0.7 basis points away | USD/JPY traded 157.25 this morning, up 1.13 yen from Friday's 156.13 close, against a dollar index up about 0.08 percent. The 1.25 percent rate takes effect Thursday, September 24; the gap to the Fed narrows to 2.625 points then and is wider until then. The ten-year JGB was 2.99 percent on September 17, with no newer row because Tokyo was closed Monday. | The first session after Thursday where the gap has narrowed and the dollar is flat enough to read the yen on its own. | |
| Rates / the Fed | The October path holding above one step on the settlement | , scored on Friday's settlement, read today | Our settlement-based estimate puts the odds of an October 28 increase at about 60 percent on Friday's fed funds futures settlement; a live read this morning gave about 56. That restores the figure we withdrew on Sunday. The ten-year closed Friday at about 5.00 percent against a Fed target midpoint of 3.875. | The next settlement we can read, and whether October still sits above half on it. |
Unchanged in markets and the economy: silver (down with gold this morning, which tells us nothing on its own), uranium, semiconductors (Friday's run we still cannot attribute), quantum, AI infrastructure, European defense and the primes, drones, critical minerals, trade (the new authority for tariffs on buyers of Russian crude is law and unused, and it cannot bite on purchases made within 30 days of enactment, so early non-use says little), the US consumer, cybersecurity, and renewables. Unchanged in geopolitics: the Red Sea, Taiwan (a fresh sortie cycle with more aircraft and fewer median-line crossings), Russia-Ukraine, and Iran and Hormuz (a Houthi attack reached Riyadh on Saturday for the first time since July; the coalition says everything was intercepted, and no physical flow changed).
Rule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
