Daily Take

Gold's test resolved on Monday, and it resolved against us. Our rule asks for two consecutive front-month COMEX settlements above 4,400. Friday's reported settlement was the first. Monday's, at 4,383.90, landed 16.10 under the line, so the count we have kept since August goes back to zero. Yesterday we wrote that the marker was closer to failing than to completing. It failed, and we report that as a loss.

The session that did it was a rally. The S&P 500 closed up 1.49 percent and the semiconductor index up 4.29, and a metal sold while stocks are bought looks like a haven being sold. That is the least flattering reading for gold. It is also unproven: the driver is unattributed, and with nominal yields down on the day we have no clean read on the real-rate leg our case runs on. The separate 4,300 line that would reopen the idea was never reached, so the idea stands, at reduced weight.

Crude split at its two ends: the front fell 3.4 percent while the December 2027 contract rose, a third session against the slow-demand story. Wednesday the summit begins. Thursday Tokyo reopens into its own rate rise.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the level or condition we wrote down in advance, and whether it has been met. Thesis is what the evidence now says about the idea itself. Where the two disagree is the interesting part. Only lanes with new evidence get a card. Definitions: Glossary

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
