Daily Take
Brent settled Wednesday at 103.08, up 3.83, its largest day since September 10, on Iran's rhetoric at the UN. Two days earlier it fell more than two dollars on reports of a Saudi pipeline restart. A market that rises on a speech two days after falling on reports of a pipeline restart is pricing risk. The move sat at the front, where a war premium lives; the back, two years out, held still. That shape is consistent with a premium marked up, and says nothing yet about supply.
Gold fell 58 dollars to 4,318.40, away from our 4,400 line, and whether real yields or the dollar did the work is unsettled.
No rule fired today, but the slow-demand thesis moves to under review. Four readings have now pushed the back of the Brent curve above the level that argues against it; the calm-front condition is the only piece still missing. Tonight's settlements score the next tests in all three lanes, while Tokyo gives us its first close with the BOJ rate at 1.25 percent.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the level or condition we wrote down in advance, and whether it has been met. Thesis is what the evidence now says about the idea itself. Definitions: Glossary
| Lane | Rule | Rule state | Thesis state | What changed | Next test |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crude / the front of the curve | A Brent front-month settlement below our $92 line | Wednesday's 103.08 settlement, up 3.83, the largest day since September 10, came on Iranian rhetoric at the UN; the front led and the back held still, two days after the fall on the Saudi pipeline restart. | A settlement below 92; a dated Saudi statement or loadings figure on the pipeline, re-check October 8. | ||
| Global demand / the back of the curve | A December 2027 Brent settlement holding above our $75 line through a session where the front is calm retires the idea; a settlement below $75 confirms it | , the calm-front condition absent | December 2027 read 79.83 on Thursday morning, with July 2027 at 84.62 and July 2028 at 75.70, the whole back of the curve above its July 22 baselines for a fourth time; the front was anything but calm. | A December 2027 settlement above 75 through a calm front; China's completed September import figure. | |
| Gold / miners | Two consecutive front-month COMEX settlements above $4,400 | , count at zero | Wednesday's 4,318.40 close, down 58.00 from 4,376.40, moved away from the line; the 4,300 review line held, and the cause is unassigned. | A first settlement above 4,400 restarts the count; a settlement below 4,300 opens a review of the idea. | |
| Japan / the yen | USD/JPY at 165, or the ten-year JGB above 3.00 percent | JGB LEG , scored September 16 and since eased back under the line; YEN LEG | The Bank of Japan's 1.25 percent took effect Thursday against a Fed midpoint of 3.875, a gap of 2.625 points and narrowing; USD/JPY last confirmed at 157.37 on Tuesday's close; the ten-year last published at 2.99 percent on September 17. | Thursday's Tokyo close, the first at the new rate; a published ten-year row above 3.00. | |
| Rates / the Fed | The October path holding above one step on the settlement | , scored on the September 21 settlement | Our settlement-based estimate of an October 28 increase last scored at about 60 percent on the September 21 fed funds futures settlement. | The next scored settlement, and whether October still sits above half on it. | |
| US equities and semiconductors | The August 13 record close retaken | S&P 500 7,706.03 and the semiconductor index 12,534.28 on Wednesday's closes, the S&P under the record; no cause for last week's semiconductor run has been confirmed. | Micron's results September 30; TSMC's September sales around October 10. |
Markets and economy, thesis states unchanged: silver (our 70 line unmet) · uranium (89.68 spot and 96.50 long-term on a direct Cameco read; our 80 line unmet) · quantum · AI infrastructure (SK hynix denies any decision on an Intel Ohio site; held to October 23) · European defense and the primes · drones · critical minerals · US consumer · cybersecurity · renewables
Geopolitics, thesis states unchanged: trade (the truce extended two months to January 10 during Xi's state visit) · Russia-Ukraine (Ukrainian drones reported hitting two refineries 1,300 to 1,400 km inside Russia on Wednesday) · Red Sea · Taiwan · Iran and Hormuz
Carried lanes, the detail: silver (every reading this week sits in the mid-60s against a line at 70, and the idea needs a clean official settlement above it) · uranium (a direct read of Cameco's published table returns the August pair we had carried, 89.68 spot and 96.50 long-term, so this week's two-value question is closed; the long-term indicator sitting above spot is ordinary contracting structure and an industry-average indicator is no floor) · trade (a two-month extension against an expected six or more is the weaker of the two signals available; it moves the cliff to January 10 rather than removing it; reported by CNBC and corroborated by NBC and Bloomberg) · Russia-Ukraine (the Novo-Ufa and Kuibyshev refinery strikes, claimed by Ukrainian intelligence and unconfirmed by any other party, hit refining; Russian crude exports have been rising this month while product exports fall, so the strike is product-negative and crude-neutral and does not support a supply reading of Wednesday's oil move; no new dated EU or US sanctions action was found this week) · Red Sea (a reported Houthi seizure of Mayun Island at the strait's entrance around September 12 rests on the Houthis' own claim as relayed and is not asserted; it would be a second contested chokepoint alongside Hormuz, which is exactly why it waits for confirmation) · Taiwan (five aircraft crossed the median line on September 20 by Taiwan's own count; a single day's small number is not a trend) · Gaza (a 2.45 billion dollar reconstruction blueprint proposed at the UN on Wednesday is a proposal; nothing is committed or disbursed) · dollar alternatives (the yuan's share of global payments read 2.18 percent for June on a tracker whose method changed in February, so it is not comparable with earlier figures and is not shown as a decline) · US funding (a stopgap through December 11 is moving through Congress; whether it is signed before the September 30 deadline is the test)
Rule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
