Daily Take
Gold closed Friday at 4,321.20, up 23.20 and back above our 4,300 line, while the dollar index slipped 0.32 to 100.97. For the first time this week the dollar and gold told the same story. The sizes still do not match. Gold rose about 1.7 times as much as the dollar fell, so the dollar did part of the work and the rest is open. A close cannot score our lines either way; only a settlement can.
Crude gave back part of Thursday's jump. Brent closed at 104.32, down 2.28, and WTI fell with it, making a single-benchmark bad print less plausible than Thursday's move. Stocks and chipmakers rose on the same day.
Read together, Friday is consistent with some premium leaving the tape. The rate half of that reading is assumed rather than shown. No new rule fired Friday, and Monday's settlements score gold against 4,300 and 4,400 and Brent against 92.
Weekend edition: every market level below is a Friday, September 25 close unless otherwise noted.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the level or condition we wrote down in advance, and whether it has been met. Thesis is what the evidence now says about the idea itself. Definitions: Glossary
| Lane | Rule | Rule state | Thesis state | What changed | Next test |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold / miners | Two consecutive front-month COMEX settlements above $4,400 | , count at zero | Friday's 4,321.20 close, up 23.20 from 4,298.00, is back above the 4,300 review line, with the dollar index down 0.32 at 100.97. | Monday's settlements against 4,300 and 4,400. | |
| Crude / the front of the curve | A Brent front-month settlement below our $92 line | Friday's 104.32 close is down 2.28 from Thursday's 106.60, with WTI down 2.20 at 92.41. | A settlement below 92; the OPEC+ meeting on October 4. | ||
| Global demand / the back of the curve | A December 2027 Brent settlement holding above our $75 line through a session where the front is calm retires the idea; a settlement below $75 confirms it | , the calm-front condition absent | December 2027 last read 79.83 on Thursday morning, September 24, and Friday's front was anything but calm; a first September estimate puts China's seaborne imports near 7.2 million barrels a day, roughly flat on August. | A December 2027 settlement above 75 through a calm front; China's completed September import figure. | |
| Japan / the yen | USD/JPY at 165, or the ten-year JGB above 3.00 percent | JGB LEG , scored September 16; YEN LEG | USD/JPY closed Friday at 158.81, up 0.55 from 158.27, a third higher close and this one against a falling dollar; the Bank of Japan's 1.25 percent against a Fed midpoint of 3.875 leaves a gap of 2.625 points, narrowing. | A published ten-year row above 3.00; a close at 165; the finance ministry stepping in. | |
| Rates / the Fed | The October path holding above one step on the settlement | , scored on the September 21 settlement | Our settlement-based estimate of an October 28 increase last scored at about 60 percent on the September 21 fed funds futures settlement; Thursday's Treasury yields were 5.18 percent on the ten-year and 4.87 percent on the two-year. | The next scored settlement, and whether October still sits above half on it. | |
| US equities and semiconductors | The August 13 record close retaken | S&P 500 7,743.41 on Friday's close, up 39.28 and still under the record; the semiconductor index 12,668.93, up 176.39, about 2.8 times the S&P 500's gain in percent terms. | Micron's results September 30; TSMC's September sales around October 10. |
Markets and economy, thesis states unchanged: silver (our 70 line unmet) · uranium (our 80 line unmet) · quantum · AI infrastructure (held to October 23) · European defense · the defense primes · drones · critical minerals · US consumer (jobless claims lower on the week) · cybersecurity · renewables
Geopolitics, thesis states unchanged: Russia-Ukraine (daytime drone strikes on Kyiv on Friday. Early reports put the toll at seven dead and dozens injured, with counts still being confirmed. Kyiv and Moscow confirmed a plan to relaunch three-way talks; a plan to talk is no ceasefire.) · NATO borders · trade (Trump and Xi met through Friday; no readout yet) · Red Sea · Taiwan · Iran and Hormuz
Carried lanes, the detail: silver (the idea needs a clean official settlement above 70, and no reading this week gives one) · uranium (Cameco's published table still shows the August pair, 89.68 spot and 96.50 long-term, with no September row yet; long-term above spot is ordinary contracting structure, and an industry-average indicator is no floor) · AI infrastructure (no dated sovereign-AI or chip-export development this week; the SK hynix filing that circulated as an Intel Ohio statement is about Japan, and nothing on Ohio is asserted; re-check October 23) · European defense (a plan to relaunch talks leaves our ceasefire condition untouched; no new order this week) · US consumer (initial claims fell to 197,000 in the week to September 19; that is the labor half of the picture, and spending is the half our demand lane needs) · Russia-Ukraine (both Friday items come from one wire roundup relaying officials; Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries continued, covered in the crude section) · NATO borders (no fresh incursion since the brief Polish airspace incident on September 23) · trade (the meeting ran September 23 to 25 with rare earths central; no joint readout or statement of terms has been published, so no outcome is described; the truce, extended by two months, now runs to January 10) · Red Sea (no fresh dated incident confirmed this week) · Taiwan (no new sortie read) · Iran and Hormuz (no fresh incident in the strait confirmed this week; the reported talks are covered below)
Rule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Is there nothing new on this lane today? If so, the card keeps its last reading and that reading’s date.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
