Daily Take
The levels below are Friday's closes and settlements unless noted. Brent's front-month contract settled Friday at 104.72 on ICE, up 4.40 from the October 5 settlement. The contract for December 2027 rose 1.26 over the same days. The near end did most of the moving.
Two weekend events bear on that premium. The first is the storm. Hurricane Isaias had forced producers to shut in about 72 percent of US Gulf of Mexico oil output by Friday. By Sunday morning the estimate was down to about 58 percent, the federal offshore regulator reported. Those barrels come back as platforms restart. The second is the strait. On Sunday an outbound tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile in Hormuz, the UK's maritime security centre said, a day after another was hit and set on fire. The crew were reported safe.
This week's tape can start to sort the two. If shut-ins keep falling and the front month weakens, that supports a storm contribution to last week's rise. If the front stays firm as output returns, maritime risk remains one explanation. Transit figures, inventories and positioning would still have to weigh in. Monday's settlement will be the first after both weekend events.
Elsewhere the board carries Friday's readings. Gold rose on Friday, and chips ended a weak week while the S&P 500 gained.
Correction: The October 11 issue gave silver's Friday close as 61.05. Published figures for that session disagree, and we have withdrawn that figure. Today's silver reference is Thursday's last verified close, 59.06. The October 9 USD/JPY close previously shown as 158.25 is corrected to 158.06.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state, and lanes listed as unchanged carry their last stated reading and state forward. Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED
Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.
Full entry in the glossaryRule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
