Daily Take

On Monday the share of US Gulf of Mexico oil output still offline after Hurricane Isaias fell to about 30 percent, from about 58 percent on Sunday, according to operator-reported estimates published by the federal offshore regulator. Brent's front-month contract settled at 106.65 on ICE, up 1.93.

The decline in reported shut-ins weakens an explanation based on worsening storm outages. Brent nevertheless rose, leaving regional conflict risk and positioning as competing explanations. The same day, Houthi forces in Yemen fired missiles at the Saudi capital for a third straight day, Al Jazeera reported; the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted them.

The human cost is rising. Early reports put the toll from the attacks on Riyadh over recent days at least 14, with counts still being reconciled.

The session does not isolate a Hormuz-specific premium. The supply-shock regime held a little firmer at the front, while the dollar rose, gold slipped and chip stocks fell again.

Cities Are Running Out of Salt Before Winter Even Starts

Road salt is one of those things nobody thinks about until plow trucks come back empty, and this year that's happening before the first snowfall. Some cities haven't gotten a single bid for winter supply, while others are paying nearly double last year's price.

North America doesn't mine enough of its own, which is why it ships in 8 to 10 million tonnes from places like Egypt and Chile, two weeks away by boat.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state, and the card dates when that state was last assessed; lanes listed as unchanged carry their last stated reading and state forward. Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
