Daily Take

The S&P 500 rose about 0.3 percent on Thursday, to 7,744.06. The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell again, about 0.9 percent to 11,581.21, in the first US session that could answer TSMC's strong third quarter. Earlier in the day it was down 3.3 percent. Reuters tied the selling to rising bets on a rate rise and to the cost of the AI buildout.

So strong company numbers met a second day of selling. That is less strange than it looks. The quarter measures demand already booked. The selling, on Reuters' account, is about the price of money and the cost of financing the next round of AI capacity. The ten-year Treasury yield fell on Thursday, which sits awkwardly with a long-rate story, and one session cannot sort the candidates.

Oil split. US crude jumped 2.88 to 97.97 while Brent's front month barely moved, and the far end of Brent's curve fell for a second day. Gold rose 62.20 as the dollar weakened. For chips, the map holds the thesis at mixed: the company numbers are strong, and the tape has now looked past them twice.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Thesis stateMIXED

Does today’s evidence point both ways on the same thesis?

Full entry in the glossary

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Thesis stateUNDER REVIEW

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Rule stateRETIRED UNRESOLVED

A test withdrawn without a resolved outcome. Its history records why it was retired and whether it was replaced.

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Rule stateUNRESOLVED

The registered end condition remains unscored. This does not mean the confirming rule fired or the thesis was invalidated.
