Daily Take

Brent's front-month contract settled at 109.86 on Friday, up 3.94, or about 3.7 percent. That was its highest settlement since May 19. On the same day the semiconductor index fell about 3.8 percent and the S&P 500 about 1.1 percent. No market we track has traded since.

The oil move came with reported causes. A Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a missile aimed at the Red Sea port of Yanbu, a drone strike shut a crude unit at a Russian refinery, and a ship-tracking firm reported Gulf crude flows sharply lower. None of those is yet confirmed as the driver. The chip selling came with a different story: worries about the debt behind the AI buildout.

On Friday evening, after the close, President Trump signed an order implementing the new Russia sanctions law and waiving its duties, with a certification to Congress. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the president would take up to 60 days to weigh the economic effects. For oil, the map holds the thesis at unconfirmed: the premium is rising, and its source is still a set of reports.

Correction: Our October 15 and October 16 issues showed gold's end line as unresolved. Settlements on October 14 and 15 were below 4,300, and the line is scored as met on October 14.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
