Daily Take
Ukrainian drones hit an oil terminal and an oil depot in Saint Petersburg on Sunday, October 18, the city's governor said. Early reports put the toll at one dead and at least five injured, and counts may still change. The two Saint Petersburg sites follow the strike on the Ryazan refinery on October 14 and 15.
The Gulf supplied two kinds of evidence. UK maritime warnings, as Anadolu Agency reported them, put two tanker attacks on Friday northeast of Al Jubayl, Saudi Arabia, inside the Gulf and well west of the strait. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that two supertankers hit mines, a claim that could not be independently verified. Neither shows that oil shipments were lost.
Brent last settled on Friday, when its front month closed the week at 109.86 and US crude at 101.41. Early Monday, Brent traded near 107.88, down 1.8 percent, in a CNBC report published before 5 a.m. New York time, as traders weighed the chance of more Russian supply; Monday's official settlement is still pending. The Russian strike is a fuel story first: it exposes refined-product exports before it touches crude. The Gulf attacks matter more for the front of the curve. For oil, the map holds the thesis at unconfirmed. Monday's settlement will put a price on the weekend, but one session cannot show which story moved it.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state, and the card dates when that state was last assessed; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Thesis stateUNDER REVIEW
Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?
Full entry in the glossaryRule stateINVALIDATED
The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
Full entry in the glossaryThesis stateUNCONFIRMED
Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.
Full entry in the glossaryRule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.
Full entry in the glossaryThesis stateMIXED
Does today’s evidence point both ways on the same thesis?
Full entry in the glossaryRule stateRETIRED UNRESOLVED
A test withdrawn without a resolved outcome. Its history records why it was retired and whether it was replaced.
