Daily Take

Brent's front month settled Tuesday at 108.79 on ICE, down 0.76. Its December 2027 contract settled at 86.58. The S&P 500 rose 0.28 percent, the semiconductor index slipped 0.29 percent, and the dollar index fell 0.25.

The quiet day carried the news. One of our standing ideas is that growth in the world's oil demand is fading, and that the war premium sits only at the front of the curve. We set a test in advance to check it: if oil for delivery a year out stays expensive on days when the front barely moves, the far end is not pricing a slump. Tuesday was the fifth such session since October 11. The test is met.

That weakens the demand-slump view, and the map now holds that thesis under review. It does not show that demand is healthy. It shows that the far end of the curve is still priced above the slump the thesis expected, and the question now is what holds it there.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Thesis stateUNDER REVIEW

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Rule stateRETIRED UNRESOLVED

A test withdrawn without a resolved outcome. Its history records why it was retired and whether it was replaced.

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
