Daily Take

Brent's front month settled Thursday at 113.17 on ICE, up 4.35. Its December 2027 contract settled at 86.58, a little lower than the day before. The near end of the oil curve jumped. The far end slipped.

Reuters tied the jump to Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, which revived fears for Gulf supply, and reported that Saudi Aramco told staff to evacuate its Dhahran headquarters. That reporting favors a supply scare. It does not rule out a second force: December Brent stops trading on October 30, and a contract in its last days can be squeezed. Nothing reported says how much of the 4.35 each explains.

The split matters more than the jump. Our demand-slump thesis went under review this week because oil for late 2027 stayed expensive on quiet days. Thursday was a loud day, and the far end eased. A move led by the front says something about near-term supply. It says little about how much oil the world will burn in 2027. That leaves the review open and moves no lane.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state, and the card dates when that state was last assessed; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Each lane's end line, and its history, is public at theregimemap.com/lanes. Definitions: Glossary

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

A test withdrawn without a resolved outcome. Its history records why it was retired and whether it was replaced.
