Daily Take

The US economy grew at a 3.4 percent annual rate in the third quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis's advance estimate shows. Consumer prices on the bureau's PCE measure rose 3.6 percent in the year to September, and 3.1 percent without food and energy. Both reports came a day after the Federal Reserve held its range at 3.75 to 4 percent. Neither is the test our US demand lane is scored on. That test is narrower: services prices in the October consumer price report, due November 10.

The Bank of Japan kept its target for the overnight call rate at around 1.25 percent on Friday, by an 8-1 vote, its statement says. The standing regime rests on the gap between US and Japanese policy rates. With both banks on hold, that gap sits where it has stood since September 24, so the meeting does not trigger the test we registered on it. Oil reaches Japan too: a weak yen makes imported energy dearer.

So the map does not change today. The regime still waits on the yen against a steady dollar.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state, and the card dates when that state was last assessed; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Each lane's history, and any end line we have registered, is public at theregimemap.com/lanes. Definitions: Glossary

Thesis stateUNDER REVIEW

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

Full entry in the glossary

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Thesis stateMIXED

Does today’s evidence point both ways on the same thesis?

Full entry in the glossary

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Rule stateRETIRED UNRESOLVED

A test withdrawn without a resolved outcome. Its history records why it was retired and whether it was replaced.

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.
