Daily Take

Tankers were reported attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on two days running. On Thursday, a tanker was hit by explosives fixed to its hull from a small boat, Reuters reports, citing the UK's maritime security service, UKMTO. Who placed them was not immediately clear, Reuters added. On Friday, Oman evacuated 25 crew from another tanker attacked off Musandam, the AP reports. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said tankers had struck mines, a claim the AP could not verify.

Oil rose the same day, on its contract's expiry. Gold went the other way. It fell below 4,000 dollars an ounce to its lowest in more than a year, Kitco reports, on a day the dollar and Treasury yields eased.

Brent, gold, Treasuries, US stocks and the dollar last traded on Friday, so every price in this issue is Friday's. The attacks raise the risk to near-term oil supply, and the strait remains short of the durable reopening our test sets. The standing regime turns on a different question: the gap between US and Japanese policy rates, and how the yen responds to it. The Fed kept its range on Wednesday, and on the Bank of Japan's reported hold on Friday the gap is where it was. The dollar also fell broadly on Friday, so it was not the flat-dollar session that would isolate the yen. The map does not change.

Weekend edition: every market level below is a Friday, October 30 close or settlement unless otherwise noted.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is where the idea stands today. Each lane ends with the next event that tests it. A lane with no new evidence keeps its last thesis state; lanes listed as carried forward keep their last stated reading and state. Each lane's history, and any end line we have registered, is public at theregimemap.com/lanes. Definitions: Glossary

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.

Rule stateRETIRED UNRESOLVED

A test withdrawn without a resolved outcome. Its history records why it was retired and whether it was replaced.

Thesis stateUNDER REVIEW

Has enough evidence built up against the thesis that the thesis itself is in question, not just today’s move?

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.
