Daily Take

September's forecasting round is complete, and the three bodies that publish a 2026 oil demand number all moved it the same way. OPEC, the IEA and the US Energy Information Administration each cut, as summarized in trade press, and none raised. The sizes differ by account. The direction does not, and that is the first one-way round in our tracking record. The condition we set for weakening the demand-erosion idea was two consecutive upgrades from those bodies. The round delivered the opposite.

What three cuts cannot say is whether the demand is lost or postponed. China's September imports rose by one estimate, with refinery runs unreported beside them, and a rising import figure without the runs is restocking as readily as recovery. The tests are dated: payrolls Friday, China's run rates on October 20, and the back of the Brent curve against our 75 line. The map does not change today. The demand lane stays a watch with no map entry, and the Japan card records its first session against as an observation.

Written before Thursday's open: every market level below is a Wednesday, September 30 published close unless the line carries its own date.

The scoreboard

How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is what the evidence says about the idea. Definitions: Glossary

Carried lanes, the detail: silver (Wednesday's published close of 60.10 is a December-contract vendor close; a clean official settlement above 70 is the rule) · uranium (Cameco's August row shows 89.68 spot and 96.50 long-term, a gap of 6.82; the September row is awaited) · trade (the reported extension to January 10, 2027 overtakes the November 10 date in last year's notice; no official notice for the new date has printed; summit readout re-check October 3) · AI infrastructure (no dated company development this run; re-check October 23) · European defense (our ceasefire condition is untouched; Rheinmetall's framework window runs to December 11) · the defense primes (the stopgap through December 11 is reported signed September 2, so the fiscal year opened without a lapse; the enrolled act is the reference) · drones (the Army's counter-drone award remains a ceiling rather than a flow, and a US Army award where our rule watches NATO award flow) · critical minerals (China's rare-earth control suspension runs to November 10 by secondary accounts; that date now stands on its own) · US consumer (August remains the latest print; payrolls October 2, CPI October 14) · cybersecurity, renewables and consumer hardware (carried; no fresh dated item) · Russia-Ukraine (Russia struck Kyiv's power grid overnight into Wednesday, September 30, the largest energy attack in months by press accounts, with emergency power cuts ordered in the capital; early reports put the dead between three and seven, with counts differing by source; the dated item on this lane is the sanctions law's October 18 deadline) · NATO borders (the September 23 Polish and Romanian scrambles stand as the last recorded incident) · Red Sea (no fresh dated incident confirmed) · Taiwan (no count is trended) · Iran and Hormuz (Tehran confirmed on Wednesday that it received Washington's reply to its seven-day proposal through Qatari mediators; Thursday's press accounts describe the exchange stalling; neither is a reopening, and our rule on that lane is a durable one; the UN panel's Yemen mandate re-check October 6)

What would change our view

A session after September 24 with the gap narrowed and the dollar flat enough to read the yen on its own, in which the yen weakens.

Rule stateNOT FIRED

The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

Thesis stateUNCONFIRMED

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Rule stateFIRED

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Thesis stateCARRIED

Is there nothing new on this lane today? If so, the card keeps its last reading and that reading’s date.

Rule stateINVALIDATED

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
