Daily Take
Thursday was the first full session after Micron's results, and chip stocks ran ahead of the market. The semiconductor index rose about 1.6 percent. The S&P 500 added about 0.2 percent, ending a three-session slide. Micron's own filing shows record quarterly revenue and guidance higher still. One session cannot say how much of the rally was the quarter. A bounce after three down days fits it too, and the extended US-China truce, restated Thursday with a named official source, was already days old.
The other move ran against the dollar. The dollar index rose sharply, and gold and silver rose anyway. A stronger dollar usually weighs on metals, so the dollar cannot explain the gain and probably leaned against it. What did drive it is still open. The map holds where it was. The chip case gains a strong quarter without proving the rally was about it, and gold stays below the line that would end its case. The next test is this morning's payrolls.
Written before Friday's open: every market level below is a Thursday, October 1 published close unless the line carries its own date.
The scoreboard
How to read this: each lane is a standing idea about where capital is going. Rule is the condition we set in advance and whether it has been met; Thesis is what the evidence says about the idea. Definitions: Glossary
| Lane | Rule | Rule state | Thesis state | What changed | Next test |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trade / tariffs | An official notice naming the truce's end date, or an official readout of the September summit | Caixin reports the truce extended to January 10, 2027, citing China's Commerce Ministry, with tariff cuts on about 30 billion dollars of goods a side; chips and export controls are left unsettled. | An official summit readout, re-check October 3; an official notice of the end date. | ||
| Semis / memory and foundry | Micron's results read at its own filing; TSMC's September sales | MICRON LEG , scored October 2; TSMC LEG | Micron's filing shows fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of 54.23 billion dollars and a 61.5 billion midpoint for the next quarter; the semiconductor index rose about 1.6 percent Thursday, the S&P 500 about 0.2. | TSMC's September sales, around October 10. | |
| Gold / miners | Two consecutive front-month COMEX settlements above $4,400 | , count at zero | Thursday's published close of 4,202.30, up 15.60 on a day the dollar index rose 0.65, is the fourth in a row under our 4,300 line; that line scores only on the official settlement. | The official settlement records for Monday through Thursday against 4,300; today's against both lines. | |
| Japan / the yen | USD/JPY at 165, or the ten-year JGB above 3.00 percent | JGB LEG , scored September 16; YEN LEG | USD/JPY closed Thursday at 157.56 against 157.40, while the dollar index rose 0.65 to 102.10; 7.44 yen under 165. | A session with a flat dollar that lets the yen be read on its own; a close at 165; the finance ministry stepping in. | |
| Crude / the front of the curve | A Brent front-month settlement below our $92 line | Thursday's published closes, Brent 102.31 and WTI 92.87, moved opposite ways from Wednesday, which fits a contract roll in the Brent series; no price move is read. | Brent's settlement against 92; a durable reopening of the strait. | ||
| Rates / the Fed | The October path holding above one step on the settlement | , withdrawn September 27 | No rule has been registered in place of the one withdrawn on September 27; the Fed's target range is unchanged since September 16. | September payrolls this morning; the October 28 meeting. |
Markets and economy, thesis states unchanged: global demand · US equity internals · silver (60.73 close) · uranium · quantum · AI infrastructure · European defense · the defense primes · drones · critical minerals · US consumer · cybersecurity · renewables · consumer hardware
Geopolitics, thesis states unchanged: Russia-Ukraine (Russian drones hit a Kyiv school and struck near a bridge's supports on Thursday) · NATO borders · Red Sea · Taiwan · Iran and Hormuz (Tehran says it received a US proposal on reopening the strait; no reopening agreed)
Carried lanes, the detail: global demand (no new institutional, tanker-tracking or refinery print since the September round, in which all three forecasters cut) · US equity internals (the S&P 500 closed Thursday at 7,666.45, up about 0.2 percent, ending a three-session slide; the August 13 record close is the rule) · silver (Thursday's published close of 60.73, up 0.63, sits 9.28 under the 70 line, which scores on a clean official settlement) · AI infrastructure (Micron's quarter bears on memory demand; it is not read as sovereign deal flow) · the defense primes (the stopgap through December 11 is reported signed September 2) · critical minerals (if the truce extension holds, the November 10 date loses its tariff half; China's rare-earth suspension date stands on secondary accounts) · US consumer (August remains the latest print; payrolls today, CPI October 14) · Russia-Ukraine (Russian drones hit a school in Kyiv on Thursday, October 1, with no casualties reported there, and struck near the supports of the city's Southern Bridge; the sanctions law's deadline is October 18) · Iran and Hormuz (Tehran says it received a US proposal on reopening the strait after submitting its own conditions; press accounts on Thursday described the exchange stalling; no reopening has been agreed, and our rule on that lane is a durable one; the UN panel's Yemen mandate re-check October 6)
What would change our view
A session with the narrower US-Japan policy-rate gap still in place and the dollar flat enough to isolate the yen, in which the yen still weakens.
Rule stateNOT FIRED
The condition has not been met. This label also covers a test whose required conditions were never present, and the card says which case applies. A test that needs a level to hold for two sessions stays NOT FIRED until the second session closes.

The test’s condition was met on the close it is judged on, and the card gives the date. A fired rule stays fired. If the price later moves back through the level, the rule is still fired. Only an invalidation can change it.

Does the evidence fit the thesis while another explanation for the same evidence remains open? The card names that explanation.

Is there nothing new on this lane today? If so, the card keeps its last reading and that reading’s date.

The test can no longer be judged as written. Either its instrument, level or basis has been overtaken, or the invalidating event we named in advance has happened. We replace or retire an invalidated test openly, and we never change it quietly.
